What I learnt from my year of travel around Australia in 2022

My year as a Dahl Fellow with Eucalypt Australia has been an incredible opportunity for me, both personally and professionally. It has allowed me to explore remote parts of Australia that I never thought I would see. Driving through Hassel National Park with my guide Tess Bryant was an unforgettable experience, as I took in the stunning views of native flora in full bloom. The Hakea were in bloom all the way to the horizon. Then exploring remote and wild areas on my own, I was cautious but exhilarated at the same time for the chance to be roaming the huge incredible land. The fellowship connected me with local experts who helped identify edible and medicinal plants suitable for dye extraction, enriching my knowledge in a profound way.

The experience has taught me to be adaptable and resourceful in difficult situations, like when my luggage was lost in Cairns and I had to improvise with the clothes on my back for a dyeing class. Meeting with Aboriginal elders and artists expanded my understanding of Indigenous culture and challenged me to approach each new encounter with an open mind and willingness to learn. This mindset has fuelled my creativity and inspired new projects and collaborations within the Eucalypt Australia community. Standing amidst the majestic eucalypts in Southwest WA, I felt a sense of fulfilment and wonder, cherishing the opportunity to fulfill lifelong dreams and make lasting connections. The Fellowship has been a transformative journey, shaping not only my work but also my outlook on life and the world around me.
